Spreadable Butter – there are so many brands out there; choose what you love, salty or unsalted.

Fresh Strawberries – go ahead and slice these, as they will lay better on the charcuterie board.
Honey – a touch of sweetness for that sweet tooth.
Cinnamon – adds a pop of strong flavor.

Waffles – if you’re going all out, feel free to use homemade waffles, or keep it easy and stick to the frozen ones you prefer.

How to Build a Brunch Butter Board

Step 1: Using a spatula or butter knife, scoop out your room-temperature softened butter. Starting at the top of your board, begin to spread in a zig-zag-like motion across the board until you reach the bottom leaving about an inch of empty space on all sides.

Step 2: Using your hands, crush the freeze-dried strawberries and sprinkle them on top of the butter. I like to leave them more crunchy, but if you want a finer texture, feel free to crush them as small as you like. Now, begin adding cinnamon to the board according to your taste. After that, you can start placing the fresh sliced strawberries on top.

Be creative and do a pattern or shape, or stay with the simple butter board recipe and just lay them out randomly.

Step 3: Lastly, drizzle on the honey! Be generous! You want enough honey, so its sweet flavor is in every bite. Your easy butter board recipe would not be complete without the waffles, bagels, and french toast sticks. Spread them around your butter board however you like so they are easy to grab and ready to eat! Add walnuts on top if you’re looking for an extra crunch, more fiber, and protein.

What Are Butter Boards?

It is butter spread out onto a serving board and layered with condiments and ingredients according to the theme you are going with, such as fruits and veggies.

Where did the charcuterie butter board start?

It started from a recipe in Joshua McFadden’s book “Six Seasons.” It first went viral when Justine Doiron posted a video of her making a butter board recipe on TikTok.

Are Butter Boards Sanitary?

To keep it sanitary, use utensils to serve, and don’t eat or double dip directly from the board. Be sure to clean your charcuterie board thoroughly with soap and hot water after use.

How To Make Butter Boards

Spread butter on a charcuterie board layered with toppings of your choice.

What Size Board Did You Use?

Any size will do! If you’re hosting a large group, use an extra large charcuterie board and fill it up! If there are fewer people, use a smaller board.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Use Cold Butter to Make a Butter Board?

If your butter is cold, that’s fine; it just means it will be harder to spread. I suggest setting it out an hour beforehand or using room temperature, so it’s soft and spreadable.

Do I use Salted or Unsalted Butter?

Either one is fine. You can limit your sodium intake by using unsalted or go for a sweet butter board recipe and use salted butter.

Do You Have to Whip Butter for a Butter Board?

Technically no, but it is highly recommended because it makes the butter easier to spread. Try using Kerrygold butter. It comes from grass-fed, hormone-free, antibiotic-free cows and contains at least 82% butter fat which is higher than American-made butter. It is also a healthier butter since the cows are grass-fed, and it has lower levels of saturated fat and more unsaturated fats.

How to Spread the Butter

I recommend starting at the top of your board. Place a generous amount of butter, and using a rubber spatula, spread the butter down your board in a zig-zag motion. Add more scoops of butter and continue the process as needed to fill your board.

Tips and Tricks

What to Serve with a Butter Board

The sky is the limit! If you’re serving it for an appetizer, stick to fresh herbs, such as garlic, basil, fresh rosemary, or thyme, accompanied by all sorts of veggies. Get creative! Add onions, tomato, peppers, red onions, and chili flakes with black pepper for an extra kick! Veggies go great with a garlic butter board too.  Explore with sweet and savory nuts and jam with toast. Are you a cheese lover? Create your very own cheese board with different cheeses. Those go with anything! If your board is your complete meal, like the butter charcuterie board recipe used above, stick with sides that go with your theme, such as the easy butter board recipe.

Can a Butter Board be MaDe Ahead of Time

Absolutely. Be sure to set it out in time for the butter to soften, as it will harden if you choose to refrigerate. However, I would wait until just before serving to add any of the additional ingredients to the butter board.

How to Store

It will keep best in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. Simply scoop the butter off the board then store the waffles, french toast sticks, and bagels separatley in the frigde.
